Because of the typical leaves Strömberg Pflanzennamen 39 thinks of θρῖον `fig-leaf, leaf in gen..' and compares οἶδαξ `unripe figs'. Through association with τρι- `three' arose folketymological τετρακίνη = θριδακίνη (Hippon. 135).
